A Candid Dive into Period Swimwear

Hello, lovely people. The demand for swimwear that complements our personal style and caters to the unique needs of menstruating individuals is louder than ever. This is why I decided to take on the exciting task of testing and reviewing a curated selection of period swimwear brands, aiming to provide you with insights into designs that not only make a splash but also embrace the beauty of functionality.

Back in the summertime, I reviewed several types of period swimwear as it just so happened that my period coincided with our family trip to Centre Parcs. Every cloud has a silver lining; therefore, I decided to take the plunge and see if period swimwear is worth all the hype.

Now let's be honest: I'm 40 and have three small children. My kids are four, six and eight. So yes, they made me go down every single water slide. And I did scream on the tropical cyclone, just putting it out there. But I was on my period, and I didn't want to miss out on all the fun. So this was no gentle test - this was a full-on testing period swimwear to the extreme. In case you didn't see my videos talking about it on Instagram at the time, I thought I'd pop it all in my blog for you. So, let's recap.

Cheeky Wipes Wrap Bikini

On the first day of testing, I donned the Cheeky Wipes wrap bikini, featuring an elegant wrap top paired with high-waisted bottoms adorned with playful tassels. Designed for regular to medium flow, the bottoms stole the spotlight with their comfort and style. Although I was apprehensive about potential leaks, I was pleasantly surprised— I had no leaks, no stains, and no concerns. They felt very protective. I was having a regular flow day, and these worked perfectly for spending probably two or 2.5 hours in the pool, flying down waterslides, and being busy with the kids.

However, despite the snug fit, the wrap top lacked the desired support for a larger cup size. This is just my personal preference. It fit perfectly well, and nothing 'fell out', but it wasn't the type of support I like from a bra or bikini top. I would say the top is more designed if you are a C-cup or below.

A tip for potential buyers: consider pairing the chic bottoms with a supportive bikini top of your choice for an ensemble that blends style, protection, and comfort seamlessly.

My verdict: best for style and medium flow days

WUKA Period Swim Pants

Over the next few days, I moved on to try the WUKA period swim pants, designed for lighter flow. Offering a range of leg shapes and colours, these swim pants proved versatile. The standard bikini bottom style, ideal for lighter flow days, paired easily with my personally chosen bikini top. Due to the range of colours available; purple, green, blue and magenta, you could find a pair to match a bikini top you have at home.

Comfortable, with no leaks or stains, these pants provided a reliable option for those seeking flexibility in their swimwear choices. A notable mention goes to the high-waisted version, catering to different preferences in style and support. It must be mentioned that the ones I tried are designed for a lighter flow day. They do have some others for more regular-medium flow. These felt lighter and less protected than the medium-flow ones I tried the day before.

Be aware when shopping for period swimwear that there are different types for different times in your period, depending on what your flow is like. And if you're just having a light flow day, these are ideal.

My verdict: best for mixing and matching and light flow days.

WUKA scoop-back period swimsuit

On the final day, I wanted to try the WUKA scoop-back swimsuit. Unfortunately, this classic black suit, designed for regular to medium flow, did not accommodate my tall frame. I am five foot 11, and to this day, I've never found a swimsuit (even from tall ranges) that fits my body length and supports my cup size. If anybody has designed a tall swimsuit with great support at the top, then please let me know because I am still looking for one.

Despite not being able to try it, I can describe that it has a timeless design and seems like it would be perfect for those looking for a standard, elegant black swimsuit with reliable protection. It's suitable for medium-flow days. Great design for more sporty swimmers, teens, or anyone who likes a classic black swimsuit.

My verdict: Best for if you love a classic black swimsuit.

Final Verdict

In conclusion, period swimwear is a game-changer, providing comfort and protection without compromising style. Cheeky Wipes and WUKA offer distinct options catering to various flow levels and style preferences. Whether you're into wrap bikinis, swim pants, or classic swimsuits, there's a piece for every wave rider out there.

If you have tried other styles or brands that you recommend - let me know. I'd love to test them and see how they compare. But if you are thinking of trying period swimwear, fear not, as I, a 40-year-old mom of three, affirm: period swimwear works, it's brilliant, and there's no need to worry. Dive in and make a splash with confidence!
